Modifying url in most visited site?

I use the "most visited sites" bookmark for nearly all my regular navigation. One of the sites I've most visited has changed a bit (it's an automotive forum that updated their forum software), so the URLs (3 of them) to the subforums that I like to visit no longer apply.

Rather than waiting for Firefox to see that I'm visiting the new URL as opposed to the old one (and that URL I have been visiting for years and years), I wonder if there is a way to modify the entry in the most visited sites. Or modify wherever firefox stores that a particular URL has been visited x number of times so decides to include and rank it within the most visited list.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

You can make the visit count column visible in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) via the Views menu or via the right-click context menu of the header.

You would probably have to use the SQLite Manager extension to modify such a field if you want to make such changes.

The history and the bookmarks are stored in the places.sqlite file in various tables that are usually linked via an id field. You can easily corrupt such a complex database by making changes, so best is to leave this alone and build a new most visited list.

  • Smart folders show a list created by a query of the places.sqlite database that stores bookmarks and history in Firefox.
  • Smart folder lists show a maximum of 10 entries by default.
  • Bookmarks and history items that show up in a smart folder list are stored elsewhere in another folder and any changes made are applied to the real bookmark or history item.

Firefox uses an algorithm to determine the "most visited" web pages. About the only way that I can think of to influence that (other than waiting until Firefox makes that determination on its own) is to clear your browsing history and force Firefox to start with a clean slate.

I accept there does not seem to be a utility to do this. But is anyone aware of where the counts/ranks are stored? I can't believe the algorithm would be so complex.. isn't it just page views (perhaps it knows to ignore certain page types so they are not candidates for the list at all). The numbers, rank or something must be stored somewhere. Would they be encrypted..?

Thank you cor-el. I installed SQLite manager and browsed to places.sqlite. From there I looked in the moz_places table and could clearly see the visit count. I was able to easily modify both the # of visits, and the URL, and the changes were properly reflected in the most visited menu. This will allow me to update the URLs to my most visited forum.

Thank you!!!
