this is going on the third day of shutting down Thunderbird, reopening checking mail receiving the Login failed. Login to server imap.googlemainlcom failed.

I enter the new password (which works fine directly signing on to gmail, and Thunderbird rejects it over and over and over again.

I have checked that the settings on Thunderbird match those gmail requires. I have eliminated existing passwords in the system.

Thunderbird continues to reject my login to gmail.

If you have set up 2 step verification via google because you use eg: a phone to access email as well as a computer, then you need to use a gmail application specific password in Thunderbird and not the password you would use if accessing gmail webmail via a browser.

If you do not access via a phone nor use 2 step verification, logon to gmail webmail account and make sure it is not selected.

If you use imap mail account for gmail, then you may be using 'Authentication method' OAuth2. This usually requires you to enter new passwod which gmail then asks you to logon and an OAuth2 smtp password is generated and auto stored in Thunderbird.

Passwords are stored here and can be edited: 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Paswords' tab Click on 'Saved passwords' button click on 'Show Passwords' button

right click on relevant mailbox and smtp lines for gmail and select 'Edit Password'. Type new password.
