I have tried to download the new firefox to update twice, but it won't seem to update. I keep getting notices that I have to do this.

Where are you signing up? as you do not need to sign up anywhere in order to get Firefox versions or updates.

If you want to get Firefox 9.0.1 then see http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/

If you are referring to http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/3.6.25/whatsnew/ that is just Mozilla trying to get Firefox 3.6 users to 9.0 sooner rather than later. The 3.6.25 is Not out of date as it is current as it was released on December 20th, 2011 when 9.0 was also.
