I want to copy my current profile to make another profile for another email host (settings similar)
I have a TB profile for my hughes.net email host, but since there are so many settings in the TB profile and all I want to do is create a new TB profile for my secondary Yahoo mail account, I am looking for a way to simply "copy" those settings, then change the email host name. Is there a way to do this?

Maybe I didn't explain it properly. I'll try again. I use Thunderbird because it is the best mail program I've seen. I have a profile in TB for my Hughes.net email host. Works fine. I want to use TB for my yahoo.com email account host. Since it is difficult to get all the settings right (back and forth between tabs), I thought it might be easier to "copy" my TB hughes.net profile, then change the host name and mail address to Yahoo. Reading the many problems people have been having with creating multiple profiles (lost all existing mail !!!) is it "safe" to copy a profile and make minor modifications to point to another email host?

Can you confirm you really want to create a new profile for your Yahoo account?
There is no need for that, you could simply create the Yahoo account in your existing profile.

At one point you mention you don't want multiple profiles, and on the other hand you want to copy your profile.
So I'm still a bit lost what you're trying to achieve. I think your best bet is to simply run the new account wizard and add your Yahoo account to the existing profile. Not a big deal.
