Trying to install Firefox 4.0, when I move Firefox icon to Application icon (in dmg folder) I get message that a newer version already exists there, but the version there is 3.6. What's going on?
I have Mac OS 10.5.8 and Firefox 3.6.16. I'm trying to install Firefox 4.0. I downloaded the dmg file, opened it, and moved the Firefox icon over the Application icon. The result was a message saying, "A newer item named 'Firefox' already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you are moving?" I checked the Firefox already in my Applications folder and it is definitely 3.6.16, I hesitate to go ahead with the replacement until I know why I'm getting this (apparently) false message. Can you help me?

Yes, Firefox 4.0 is a more advanced version than 3.6.16.
Mozilla does security updates for older versions long after a new version of Firefox is released. Firefox 3.5.18 was released at the same time as 3.6.16, and both are slated for another security update any day now.

Firefox 3.6.16 has a newer build and release date than Firefox 4.0 does.
OK, but is 4.0 then a more advanced version than 3.6.16 (despite the later build and release date of the latter)? Should I replace 3.6.16 with 4.0?

Thanks very much. I'll go ahead then and replace 3.6.16 with 4.0.
YES, but I am having the same problem as the author of this thread and not a one of you have offered relief ! How do I access the new version on my MAC ? I have already downloaded, the program to my APPLICATIONS file and then to my DOC. When I click on the new FIREFOX icon, I end up with the 3,6 Version. When I complete the above steps over again, my MacBook PRO says "You already have the 4,0 Version."
Who is brave enough to assist ?
