When I save (download) PDF files, they display a Firefox image in my Downloads folder. When I click on the image instead of opening the file, Firefox opens a new tab. How do I change the download default to Adobe instead of Firefox? It used to work; perhaps the new version of Firefox is the source of my problem. I realize I can pick Adobe , but I want it to download correctly from the beginning.

Try to rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
