Just installed it, and first email try to a "group list" address fails. Thunderbird no longer will use a list address. All it does is believe that the list name is the address to be used.

I cannot use this any more if the group address function is gone.

Aside, they've reduced the number of addresses that show in the left panel by about half.

Why does Thunderbird move backward seemingly with every release?

Da&%, this infuriates me. I can't believe they let something like this happen.

Workaround in v31.1:

Comment by Fabian Rodriguez 2014-09-04 06:19:15 PDT

Confirmed workarounds:

  • While composing an email open the address book and select the list you are trying to send to, highlight all the names in the list and drag them to the To: box. This uses your existing data without modifying it.
  • Replacing the blanks " " between the words in such lists' descriptions with an underscore "_". This requires modifying your mailing list(s) description(s).

As you need this fixed quickly: You can uninstall the current version via Control panel > Programs and Features and reinstall a previous version, download from here:

Version 31.0:

Version 24.7:

click on the type for your OS. eg: If using Windows select 'win32' then select the language eg: en-GB = English british then download the .exe file

One of my mailing list has 107 entries. And I use it a lot! Havin' fun!! NOT!!!

So as one suggested workaround, I highlighted all the names in the list and dragged them in the "To:" window. That worked OK. I also uninstalled TB 31.1.1.0 and installed 31.1.0 which does not have this bug. As suggested, I also turned off the auto-update option. I will keep running 31.1.0 until I am notified that this bug is fixed.

Thanks to all for the workarounds.

bplgms: The responses above include workarounds; bug links where you can Vote for a bug and links to go back to previous versions, if you do not care to try the workaround.

I'm not sure how telling the creator of this question that your 'mailing list has 107 entries' helps anyone.

What would be helpful is if you tried one of the methods and reported back if it worked for you. Suggest you first look to see if your mailing list name has any spaces eg: My List and edit using underscore to say My_List.

I have edited my post as per your suggestion. Thank you.
