I seem to have malware or adware installed with my latest update. How do I get rid of it?

Ads are popping up all over...extra tabs open with "surveys". I have looked at all of the support posts and nothing seems to address how to get rid of this. I even trashed Firefox and reloaded. Same problem. This does not happen with Safari. I am ready to trash Firefox permanently and just go back to using Safari. DOn't want to do that, I like Firefox, but this recent problem is truly annoying.

If you installed Firefox from the official Mozilla website, these pop-ups shouldn't occur. They are normally caused either by an extension, or an external application hooking into Firefox.

If you didn't download from either of those links and still have the link you downloaded from, can you report to:

Can also you provide a link to the others who are having the same issue?

If you did download Firefox from the official link, have you tried running Firefox in safe mode to see if those surveys still appear?

Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Hello,

I am not so good with Mac malware, but please take a look at:

One thing you can try is:

  • Edit (or New Fx Menu) > Add-ons
  • Remove any suspicious extensions that you may have

I went to that website...no help. It took me to the add ons ...which all look legit. I have no idea how to go through each one and see if it is okay.

It appears that others are having the same problem. Only with Firefox.

Is it possible for me to trash this latest version and download an older version? If so, how do I do that?

Chris,

Thank you for the advice. I removed all of the extensions (most I never heard of) and I am no longer getting ads or extra windows!

Hooray!
