Why does FF now say access denied when posting photos on Facebook?

Prior to version 32 I used to be able to find a picture via Google Image Search, copy the location of the image, and paste that into the filename line of the upload window in order to attach it directly to a Facebook post without downloading it first.

This would cause the browser to fetch the file from the source, and then upload it in one go. Now it refuses to do that saying I don't have access to the file even though I could still download it directly without permissions issues.

Does anyone know why this is occurring?

Hi Phydeux :-) I understand that you are adding a link of an image from Google search into the upload a file dialogue. I did not know that you could to this before. It worked when I posted it to my time line and to my status.

I used http://www.discoposse.com/wp-content/.../test-all-the-things.jpg and only have Friends can see.

Is there an image that we can use as an example to test this out?

When you get the upload dialogue box you're basically being asked to point to the location of a file you want to send to Facebook, so putting in the URL is just a direct way of pointing to a file not on your machine. You can even put a folder location like C:\Users\Bob\Documents and have it take you to that folder.

So the picture you used would be perfect, so I tried posting it to Facebook and it says "[file URL] You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the file owner or administrator to obtain permission."

Now here's the new wrinkle. I found out yesterday that the same thing happens if I plug my phone in and browse to it as an external drive and try to post a picture directly from the phone. However, if I copy the file from my phone to the PC, it works just fine.

Phydeux, did something change on your computer's general file permissions? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waNhhriqXcA I wonder if this is pc account related?

Nope. This started with v. 32 being installed. Prior to that I was fine.

BTW, I'm a network manager with 23 years in the field, so permissions are second nature to me.  :)

Of course, regardless these error messages are still occurring and not being able to reproduce the error on a personal wall in Firefox, it sounds like there may be a missing layer to the troubleshooting.

  • This being the case, what kind of post is the picture being uploaded to? Is this a built in functionality or is this a developed feature?

https://www.drupal.org/node/2185569 If not, we can eliminate that.

  • Are there also any layers of security that may be interfering? ssl or required encryption? https vs http, I believe by default it is https?
  • Does this happen on a specific platform? Mobile or desktop?
  • Is it temporary? If you flushdns does the error still occur?
  • Is the account blocked? Is there any more info on the error?
