I have been using Lightning in Thunderbird for some time now, but suddenly I can no longer access the calendar. The Calender and Tasks options in the View menu is greyed out, although calendar entries are still being displayed correctly in the Events side panel.

I tried reinstalling (lightning-3.3.1-tb+sm-linux.xpi) but that has done nothing. I am using Thunderbird 31.2.0 with Lightning 3.3.1 in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

Any help would be appreciated so long as any technical changes need to be explained clearly please. I am a bear of little brain!

The Calendar and Tasks choices under the View menu will be grey until you have the calendar open. You launch the calendar under Events and Tasks on the menu bar. Control+Shift+C is the shortcut to launch Lightning. Having the Today Pane turned on has nothing to do with having the calendar active or not.
