I migrated TB from my old PC to a new one (W7->W7).

I did manual migration copying the files in the profile folder from old PC to new PC:

Now that I try to send email, I get error message. Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail: Could not get password for smtp2.nettihotelli.fi. The message was not sent.

Same error message with the other email account that I have.

When I go to Account Settings there is only Account name field, not password field. ???

I tried to remove the account and create a new one. Remove account did not work. Nothing happened.

re :Still I do not have password field (but only email address) on the main page of Account Settings.

As already mentioned, the password is not stored nor shown in the Account Settings.

So having removed the stored passwords as per instructions by Zenos, did you close and restart Thunderbird to get it to prompt for a new password?

If closing and restarting Thunderbird does not promt for a new password to be entered, are you using an anti-virus product like Avast ?

switch off Avast and then restart Thunderbird, does it now prompt for password?

Passwords are stored separately under Tools|Options|Security|Passwords->Saved Passwords.

The usual first step with misbehaving passwords is to remove them to make Thunderbird prompt you for them afresh.

There was no password in the Saved Passwords tab. I pressed remove all and close. Still I do not have password field (but only email address) on the main page of Account Settings.

I do not have any anti virus sw running on my PC. Yet.

In the new PC I do not see anything on the Saved Passwords window list. On the old one I see several. I have Removed All on the new PC several times, restarted TB and rebooted the PC. Both are 38.1.0 versions.

Should I remove and re-install the whole package? Now that I know how to copy mail data from old to new, it won't take more than an hour.

I have some error messages in the error log. Should I copy them here?

Done. This is how it works.

Install TB to you new PC. Copy both .../AppData/Local"&"Roaming/Thunderbird/profiles/<8characters)>default to your new PC. Edit ../AppData/Roaming/Thunderbird/profiles.ini file to point to your data copied from old PC. "Path=Profiles/<8characters>.default
