You'd better look for an add-on.

Unless something is done at the server, all mail arrives at the inbox and is then filtered. It's the arrival at the inbox that cause your ire.

Thunderbird has "filters" to move mail into specific folders. Mail directed to "trash" does NOT trigger the new mail sound. But mail going to any other box triggers it. TB needs an option to specify which folders trigger the sound and which ones don't.

By using FiltaQuilla add-on you get an opportunity to choose action Do Not Notify As you use filter to move you can add that action

Added above filter. Restarted TB. The option to "do not notify" is not available when creating filter from message.

Did you go into FiltaQuilla's preferences (via Tools|Add-ons) and select the Do Not Notify action?

It should be under Tools /Add-ons /Extensions If not something is very wrong

I want to "create filter from message." It is a huge hassle and time waster to have to copy/paste all the info separately this way. It should work when creating filter from message which I am sure most want to do.

It doesn't matter which route you use to get to the message filter dialogue. The same tools are on offer either way. "Create message from filter" simply pre-loads the selected address into the filter and chooses a rule for the sender's address.

This sound to me that you already have filters moving mail around. And you wanted to change their behavior so some doesn't trigger a notify. Personally I never build from message, its so very limited. But still the option is available when you select "create filter from messages" as you have to select an action.

Remember, this action must be first, before you move a mail or it probably wont work.

Creating a separate filter for every sender would build a huge list of filters That will slow things down a lot.

Gnospen makes a good point. One filter can manage messages from multiple senders, but you have to add each sender's address to the existing filter, whereas "create filter from address" sets up a new filter each time. If your filters are non-trivial in their structure this becomes tedious very quickly and adding senders' addresses to an existing filter becomes more efficient.

The QuickFilter addon attempts to make filter creation easier using a drag and drop metaphor, but one of its strengths is the way it offers to merge a new filter into an existing one.

I haven't used the Do Not Notify action myself, (I don't care about visual notifications, and my computers are as a rule silent in operation. I see little value in funny noises when I click things and I don't need the auditory clutter of alarms and alerts.) but Gnospen may be right in that it may need to be applied before other actions. However, FiltaQuilla itself intervenes when it sees a rule ordering that may not be optimal.

In my case, I do use server side SIEVE Filters, and I have an email alias that delivers to a subfolder of my inbox (again, server side). IMAP and server side filters ensure the same rules apply to both Thunderbird and my Android mail client.

I don't wish to use Thunderbird filtering, native or add-on, but it would be very helpful if I could disable notifications for 'inbox/newsletters' yet continue to be notified for mail arriving in 'inbox'.
