I have not been able to open .docx files attached to emails when using TB (windows 10, Office 2013). "Word experienced an error trying to open the file."

I tried all the suggestions offered by Word. I tried downloading to my desktop and opening.

The only reason I wonder if TB is part of the problem is because if I go to Fastmail webmail and open from there, it WORKS.

BTW, PDF attachments work fine, just not .docx

I am ab out out of ideas.

Thunderbird does not change the content in any way. and in the message source you will see the MIME encoded attachment.

PDF is not affected

What is different in a download from a web page (webmail) and Download from Thunderbird (create file in Temp folder). Usually only the way they are treated by the anti virus.

If it was a Thunderbird setting it would be ALL attachments getting corrupted in the same way so PDF or JPG would be equally affected. Unless your PDF files are smaller that the DOCX. Perhaps it is a size issue but I doubt it. 2 words should be a fairly small file..

A bit of googling later (Windows 10 is not available in Australia. Thanks Microsoft)

Did you upgrade to Windows 10? This issue is encountered when a document is opened in Protected View. Protected View is a security feature in Office that opens potentially untrusted files in a secure sandbox where users can read them without fear of the file taking over their computer. This KB is for your issue. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086786?wa=wsignin1.0

Guess that not as obvious as I hoped... any method using TB FAILS. only thing that works is open/dl from FASTMAIL website directly.

Windows Defender and Malwarebytes only

Just sent a simple 2 word .docx attachment to my self, to both my Fastmail and Gmail accounts.

Both failed to open when using TB.

disable malwarebytes and try again.

This is PCLinuxOS, not Windows. Both the Microsoft Word entries in attachment>preferences show to use TextMaker 2016 but selecting a.docx attachments does nothing whatever.
