Maybe solved in latest update Thunderbird 38.3.0 which just occurred while typing! If problem returns then maybe caused by malware?

PREVIOUS Thunderbird version:

Firefox could access my gmail accounts but not Thunderbird unless I opened outbound port 139 in the MODEM ONLY. My computer's firewall ALWAYS blocks port 139 in\out and never causes any problems. Only previous Thunderbird required? this MODEM port 139 outbound to the web. Is my computer or modem infected?

Thunderbird does not use TCP port 139, neither for sending nor receiving mail. You can look up the ports used in your account settings.

We both have made accurate statements. So something else blocked Thunderbird from connecting until port 139 outbound was opened. Does not sound good. The freshly updated Thunderbird is still working as it should so far.
