i decided to use thunderbird over outlook because i have many email accounts and want to have a single "unread email", a single "unread junk" and also one "all mail"-- all 3 of these would span over all the email accounts. on thunderbird features page it says it does this but i cant figure out how to do it.. ive attached a screenshot of it.. anyone can help?

Smart Folders

Smart Folders help you manage multiple email accounts by combining special folders like your Inbox, Sent, or Archive folder. Instead of going to the Inbox for each of your mail accounts, you can see all of your incoming email in one Inbox folder.

As I understand it, they were re-labelled Unified Folders, but they aren't quite what you want. Unified Folders collate generic folders which exist in all accounts. You're talking about user-defined folders.

Try a Saved Search folder. I use some for similar purposes to those that you outline; in my case "Unread", "Collected Junk", "Recent Messages" and project-related messages dating back several years and stored in Archives.

Why on earth would you want your "All Mail" folders displayed, let alone aggregated into one? It will be huge.

Thats awesome! Thanks, I got my Unread and Unread Junk going. IDK why i wanted an All Mail folder at the time but i see a use for it now! I am trying to search all of my emails for a word, but it wants me to choose a certain folder and dont see any way to search through everything. it would be nice to have a smart folder so that it doesnt take 10 minutes to create the search folder each time i wanna search everything (or if there is a way to search everything!). Thanks again!!

The default search is the global search, placed in the toolbar at the top of Thunderbird's main window. This will search all folders, including archives. It's often criticised for being too liberal, as it will report instances of your word embedded inside longer words. It doesn't have a literal string search facility.

I usually recommend a Saved Search folder to users wanting a more precise search across multiple folders.

You can permit Windows' search to look into email stores (it creates digests of messages in wdseml files) but given how the searching tools in Windows have been progressively dumbed down since Windows 2000, I suspect the results from this would have a low signal to noise ratio.

yes, it does search everything, but doesnt let you define any search parameters. like if you wanna search all items in a specified date range, etc.. would allowing windows to search thunderbird items allow such parameters? and if so im wondering what the implications on system performance and lifespan of an ssd would be?

I looked at this page, but I don't think it's relevant for Mac users? I was able to create a search, but it would only let me choose one account or folder (& sub-folders to search...since I want to create an "All Mail" search for all 3 of my mail accounts, I'm really hoping there's a way for Mac users to choose mailboxes as well.
