I received an e-mail from a friend that repeats about every 5 minutes. It is blocking other incoming messages on my computer. It does not effect the e-mail on my phone. The sender says his sent folder shows only one.

Go to your email provider's website, log in to your email account there and delete this message. I'll wager there's only one copy of it, but Thunderbird can't mark it has having been completely and successfully downloaded, so it's left to try again next time. This is usually because there is some technical flaw that prevents Thunderbird being able to identify the proper end of the message. As you might feel if you read a sentence with no period

The problem went away by itself. Probably the server corrected itself.
