For some reason I find I have a folder called Sent and another called Sent Mail. The first one is a sub-folder of a folder of my email address, the second is a sub-folder of one called Gmail (this word Gmail is in italics and rather greyed-out). There appears to be no logic as to why a mail I send gets into one folder or the other - or both. What am I missing?

you are missing some configuration settings.

First move all sent mail to the folder under the [gmail] entry. Right click the account in the folder pane and select settings in server settings select the advanced button. Add [Gmail] to the server directory entry. Click oK. In copies and folder set Thunderbird to not save copies of messages you send for this account. (Gmail will make a copy in send items when you send the mail and you do not want 2 I assume. Otherwise specify to use the local folders send folder in Thunderbird.

I'm now getting a message saying that mail server responded [NONEXISTENT] Unknown Mailbox: gmail/Sent (Failure)

A further development! TB crashed and all the folders in gmail disappeared and so did the others in the main folder. I had to create a sent folder, but that's now empty! Is there a way I can recapture the sent messages?

Did you get the case right in the server directory. Most that have a problem ignore the case to their peril
