Firefox just updated itself to 49.0.1 even though it did not click to install. I have update set to notify me but 'DO NOT INSTALL!' I noticed Norton Security inspecting gmp-widevinecdm.dll and Google was the author. What exactly is this and Do I need it?

It is used for Multiplatform Content Protection for Internet Video Delivery. IOW, as a standardized DRM module using Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) per W3C standards.
