Thunderbird was updated with 52.1.1 10 days ago in Window's 7. My Chrome browser Version 58.0.3029.110 (64-bit) was updated May 15, 2017. In the last week however I had a message "Couldn't Load XPCOM" that prevented me from opening Thunderbird...searched online for XPCOM solution, reloaded Thunderbird and the message went away. Now however, Thunderbird (format of the mail page has changed also) opens but none of my many folders will open when selecting it. They will only "open in a new window." New mail loads but the inbox has to be "viewed in a new window." Mail can be sent. In trouble as this is timely and all of the mail folders contain my various interests in detail. Read about similar older responses re reloading Thunderbird, etc but nothing specific to this situation.

Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
