You misunderstood me. This was not solution of course. this was just to be put on the problem. It was a method to be tried. In this problem like this, the main problem comes from add-ons. So you need test it in safe mode.

There is a Reddit sub forum for Firefox CSS also.

Hi Lara, I'm sorry, you got all the "dots" but they were not connected.

In your screenshot of the Customize pane, those options were added by the Classic Theme Restorer extension. Those were not built-in Firefox buttons.

Classic Theme Restorer cannot run in Firefox 57 because add-ons can no longer make significant changes to the toolbar area. But the author of the CTR extension posted custom style rules you can use to accomplish many of the same changes. cor-el provided a link to that site.

In order to apply those rules to Firefox's user interface, you create a chrome folder and download the CTR rule files there. So in more detail:

(1) Create a new folder named chrome in your Firefox profile folder. That is Steps #1 - #3 on this page:

https://www.userchrome.org/how-create-userchrome-css.html

(2) I extracted the specific CTR rules for text buttons on the toolbar and saved them here:

https://www.userchrome.org/samples/userChrome-TextOnlyOnToolbar.css

Save that file somewhere and then move it into the chrome folder.

(3) Right-click > rename userChrome-TextOnlyOnToolbar.css to juse userChrome.css.

(4) The next time you start Firefox, it will discover the userChrome.css file and modify the appearance of the toolbar.

I'm attaching a screenshot of what it does to mine. If you have too many long label items, you can right-click > Pin to Overflow Menu to move them to the >> button list.

If you want more features from CTR, go to cor-el's link. There is a lot to try out if you like.

Hi Lara, if the rules do not work the way you want, you can go to the chrome folder and delete the file (or add any character to its name, such as XuserChrome.css). The next time you start Firefox, since it won't find userChrome.css, Firefox will just use its built-in rules for the toolbar.

Thank you, Jscher

That is one of the reason that I mainly use @import rules in userChrome.css. That allows to quickly enable or disable a specific rule set and use the set in different profiles and different Firefox versions.

Very disappointed that this problem has been kicking around for several months. I refuse to upgrade to Firefox 57 because I cannot add text to the 20 toolbar icons I use on two toolbars. As a user of at least a dozen applications that have toolbar icons, it is impossible for me to remember what all these icons are, and I do not want to waste time holding the cursor over an icon to find out what it is. I also do not feel comfortable playing around with a CSS file, especially as this seems to be a feature (text on icons) that did not have to be deleted from Firefox 57. Why not put it back?

Still disappointed, too, that a number of the most useful add-ons don't work with 57. Isn't it possible for Mozilla to help developers to make the changes needed so that their add-ons work with 57? It seems that Mozilla takes the attitude that " it's the developers' problem."

Hi cloverdavid, as far as I know, Firefox never had text under icons on the main toolbar as the default configuration, it was always a custom configuration for those that liked an earlier browser. Yes, using a userChrome.css file is more difficult than checking a box in an add-on. But there's no timeline for letting extensions make that kind of change to the user interface, so at some point, you may need to take 10-15 minutes to do the style rule fix. I suggest starting a new thread for that since it will probably be Firefox 59 by then.
