Text on web pages sometimes disappears

Sometimes, when I am looking at a web page, some of the text disappears. The formatting and layout does not change, and it doesn't matter what colour of text or background is there. The text will become invisible starting at some point in the web page to some other point. I think that images remain visible, but I am not 100% certain. The text reappears when it is selected and then unselected (click-and-drag and [CTRL]+[A] both work). Note that the text disappears some time after the page is loaded (seconds to minutes). It first displays correctly and then disappears (I have watched it vanish).

The problem happens intermittently (probably between 10% and 1% of web pages opened). It has persisted through many update cycles of Firefox. I don't remember if it started with some Firefox update, or if it started when I got Windows 8.1. I think it happens more on pages with more text (many screens worth), but it could just be more noticeable there. I have seen it on the Facebook sign-in page.
