When I try to Get Messages Thunderbird sends the login info, Seems to make a connection, Sees the number of emails to download and then the green indicator bar at the lower right slows or stops. Eventually an error message appears - ' connection to server timed out'. I tried resetting my password but it did not make any difference. I spent an hour on the phone with a nice Tier 2 tech from Frontier who may have been able to speed up our dsl, but was no help with the email download problem.

Suggestions ?

Thanks

Greg

Hey! It is working again. In today's Strib the tech help column had a question about Outlook sending but not receiving email. They suggested that the writer's email profile was corrupted and the solution was to create a new profile.

I tried that in Tbird and it worked. It worked today anyway. We will see what tomorrow brings.

Here are the settings provided by your provider to use. Make sure they match what you have in Thunderbird. It also says to only use the section of your username that is before the @ sign and not your complete email address.

Thanks but when I tried the username without the frontier.com Tbird asked for my password and could not login. Changing back to the entire email address and reentering my password allowed Tbird to login and try to down load messages. Frontier setting are what I have now and I would have thought that the Frontier tech would have spotted an obvious mistake.

The 1st tier help desk of any corporation only knows to pickup the phone when it rings. They get graded on how many calls they handle not if they solved the problem. If the instructions posted for your email provider do not work then you need to ask them why. Do not be afraid to ask for 2nd tier support.

I agree the tier 1 guy was hopeless. Couldn't spell, etc. The Tier 2 guy was nice but useless. Last time this happened they changed application specific passwords. Frontier sucks. We are the end of the dsl line and have a hard time streaming more than 32k audio.

Sorry for the pokey responses by we have a small vegetable far and are about two weeks behind but trying to catch up... Once I see a little daylight, maybe Sunday, I'm going to start up in safe mode and see if Kaspersky is up to no good.

Taking a closer look at what changed the server was originally pop3.frontier (or something like that...). In the new profile it was yahoo.
