Can the "edit" button be placed back on the tabs page? Removing unnecessary/unwanted tabs is a chore now without "edit" click dismiss 15 times per tab

more options

I have the 8 tabs i want on my tab page. Other sites i visit don't need to be on my tab page put show up there anyway. There used to be an edit feature to easily "dismiss" the page/tab from the page. Only tabs i want on this page are tabs I put there. But if you are going to auto-populate then it should be easy to un-populate, it's not easy any more because the edit button is gone. Just because I visit a site doesn't mean I want it on my tabs page. Make sense? Unless I want it there, at which time I would put it there.

I've pinned all the specific pages (8) that i want on the top line. the others are taking upwards of 15 to 20 clicks of the dismiss OR MORE just at that one instance to go off the page. i don't worry about how many times during the day or week that it shows up, it's how long that single instance takes to remove it. then i move to the tile beside it, and the next one beside that. some only take one dismiss click, or 2 or 3 and others take more and i never know how many until i start. so if i start at 3pm i'll have them all gone by 3:05 or 3:10pm. if i don't do this 3 or 4 times a day it gets REALLY bad. tiles seem to be lined up in a holding pattern to land on the tab page as soon as there is room for them. do you have a 1-800 because i don't think i'm communicating my concern where you guys can understand what i'm saying.

HI, are you Right Clicking the Tab as there are a lot of commands there ?

When you say Edit to you mean the Menu Bar. Than can be turned on 2 ways from Customize then page bottom Toolbars or mouse to top of page and Right Click and turn on the Menu Bar.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Or do you mean your tabs are missing the X to Close a Tab ?

before the latest update, up above the far right tab icon on the top row was a three dot which was separate from the ones over each tab icon and right beside this 3 dot was the word edit. Also, EACH TAB still had the same 3dot they always had. now i have to right click on each tab i don't want and select "dismiss" 15 times or more per tab sometimes depending on how many pages i scrolled or looked at on that page or which ever site like WAPO or CNN or whatever.org etc etc etc. the other choice remove from history and then it asks me if i'm sure (??) i usually clear history at the end of the night anyway. i have to right click and dismiss numerous times per tab icon as i don't want this on my tab page. I didn't put it there, but it autopopulates (*unless i am private browsing). the only tabs i want are the 8 i put there, but every page i go to seems to go on the tab page. so instead of MY 8, i have 9 or 10 or 11 depending on how many pages or sites i visited. i don't want every site i visit to make itself at home on my tab page. it does it by itself i only want 8 and the "edit" button next to the 3dot is no longer there.

Hi, no information came about your extensions. Firefox has never had the word edit in a tab and the 3 dot I have never seen this myself. My installs have been strange at times and never knew things existed as was not there in mine. But this sounds like it was a Extension you may have had installed that is no longer supported.

Here is your 3 dot info. It comes from Pocket (which I do not use). https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-new-tab-page

You can hover a tile on the new tab page to see a three-dot icon appear. Click this icon to find an Edit and Dismiss item. Hover the Top Sites line to see the three dot menu with the Add item.

See this articles about the default New Tab page (about:newtab).

Here is a sample i captured from google. screenshot won't work on the tab page. i wanted to send you mine. but oh well, say i want to get rid of wiki. i click on the 3 dot and click dismiss (numerous times sometimes) and it's gone :-) until the next time i go to wiki and it shows up again and i have to keep doing that on 3 or 4 or more not just wiki, but different sites and it takes a while just clicking dismiss. can we only put the ones i want there not auto-populate or did you not know it does this on it own, add tabs for me whether i want them or not (and it's not). meanwhile, make it easier to remove the tabs. the edit button was there, now it's not. i can't make this stuff up.

Hi gary2390, I think "dismiss" is only for the exact URL and not for all pages on a site. Could that be the problem?

To get sites you want into the top positions, so you can either:

  • click the 3-dot button on the particular tile > Pin, then drag into position
  • click the 3-dot button on the particular tile > Edit, then paste a different URL
  • click the 3-bot button for the Top Stories section and add a new tile

I'm not sure how Edit was different... I don't do much with this page.

Note that you may want to reset the blocked pref that stores hashes of all sites you have blocked.

Changes made manually on the about:newtab page are stored in prefs that you can find on the about:config page.

  • browser.newtabpage.pinned stores websites that you have pinned to a tile.
  • browser.newtabpage.blocked stores websites that you have removed by clicking the X button in a tile.

i know how to use firefox tabs. the edit button i am talking about doesnt exist anymore so let's just drop it. i have my 8 tabs on the first row as i want them. the second row "autopopulates" everytime i go on a webpage or blog. i don't want it to do that, but even with 1 row selected instead of show 2 rows they still are there and the longer i leave them the more pages (hidden) stack up etc etc.

i KNOW how to get them off of there. click the 3 dot and select dismiss. duh.

HEREIN lies the problem, and where i keep losing you guys. when i remove theoldmotor, for example, i'll select and click dismiss ONCE only and it's gone. but then i go to shorpy, the next one, and select and click 15 (or more) times before it's gone. and then on to artcontrarian for about 5 or 6 select and click dismiss until that one goes away, and on down the line. lots and lots of clicks for 4 or five tabs numerous times daily. (whew*)

if i don't do this numerous times throughout the day, needless to say they really stack up. they fill those bottom 8 up but there are more waiting (somewhere) to take the place of the visible ones as they are dismissed. i actually spend a lot of time doing this and after awhile it gets ridiculous.

there is probably nothing that can be done to stop the bottom tabs from populating, and there is nothing wrong with saying so. i was just having a problem explaining because i don't speak the lingo for you guys

oh gee, i got rid of those others. where did these come from? oh well.

Yes, Firefox will always find something new to fill the space. It's easier to pin your own than battle the accumulation of history if you find those distracting.

yes/no question. can i tell it to stop?

thank you for all your help.

If you have dismissed that many websites then you should check the pref I mentioned above (browser.newtabpage.blocked) because otherwise prefs.js will grow quite quickly.

It is useless to block pages via dismiss because if the URL is different on a next visit then Firefox considers this a different page and you can't block domains. Pinning specific pages to each tile should prevent Firefox from adding pages to the tiles.

See also this pref that replaces previously used prefs to set the number of tiles:

  • browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.topSitesRows

Settings the number of rows to 1 should have solved the problem and limited the total number of Top Sites tile to 8. I don't know why that isn't working for you. Did you try reloading the new tab page bypassing the cache -- for example, Crl+Shift+r or Shift+F5.

As for stopping Firefox from filling blank tiles, no, I'm not aware of a way to do that other than pinning something there.
