Directly following update to Firefox version 63.0 I am getting pop up ad events in new windows, not new instances of Firefox. I manually update my hosts file to block ads. The ads are coming from one or more of the few sites I use all day every day, ads I've never before had pop up. It is positively related to the update and, I presume, related to the new content handling/blocking feature built into version 63.0. Is there a setting I need to configure or is this a bug?

Thanks for the help.

I am happy to report that I've not had a single pop up since the update to 63.0.1. I am curious though about the browser content handling being able to override the hosts file. In any event, I'm a happy camper and impressed Mozilla addressed this minor glitch so quickly.

Thanks again for the help.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good ad / pop-up blocker.

I am already using ad blocking "I manually update my hosts file to block ads." The problem is that the update to 63.0 is somehow overwriting my ad blocking. It is positively due to the update as the problem with the ads started occurring minutes after installing the update. So, I am hoping for help with either the settings or hearing that others are also having the same issue. It's either a bug or the new content handling/ad blocking feature built into the browser has settings I need to adjust? Or, can I disable this feature? It sounds like a great idea, but it's not working properly at the moment.

Hi carrotwaffle:

You wrote: " The ads are coming from one or more of the few sites I use all day every day, ads I've never before had pop up."

We can't read your mind and figure out which websites you are talking about  :-)

1. Please let us know which websites have the new ads by copying and pasting a few URLs here.

2. I would suggest disabling your add-ons: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/disable-or-remove-add-ons and

3. if that doesn't work, please try Firefox safe mode: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

and see if that helps as the next steps.

4. Content Blocking settings are here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/content-blocking

It's not an easy topic to diagnose because there an infinite variety of crazy ads out there! Wish it was easier but we're working on !

Cheers!

Roland/Fred, thank you for the help.

I had thought I better make note of the ad urls. The actual pages generating the ads I was not sure of as I never actually noticed when the ad popped up, but only after the fact that one had opened in the background. I also misled a bit as the pop up was in a new window and had a taskbar button, just it was not a full new instance of Firefox is what I meant. Fortunately, I just installed an update to version 63.0.1 and I am hoping this includes a fix for this issue.

I'll post back tomorrow or next day with results, either way.

Thanks again!
