downloaded Thunderbird, typed in username and password, new screen came up, asked me to login, username and password won't work, can't get this problem resolved

Quite a common issue for folk using Nortons and some other anti virus programs. What anti virus are you using?

If nortons disable sonar and email scanning before trying to set up an email account.
