I updated Thunderbird, have to sign in, forgot username and pass, Thunderbird isn't sending username or pass to my email so I'm now locked out

I asked for my password. I asked for my username. I was told both would be sent to my email. They weren't. I asked again several times. Still no email. I am now locked out and Thunderbird is now useless to me.

Your email username and password are administered with your email provider. Thunderbird has nothing to do with them and is not going to be sending you anything. There is not even a place in Thunderbird to request that info be sent to you. You need to be talking to whoever promised to send you your email log in info.

Apparently this answer is WRONG. I DID finally get a response with to my requests for password and username. They are NOT the same as the ones administered with my email provider and they are NOT the ones I needed to be talking to. Now that the information was sent I was finally able to sign in. Then it took some time before my Thunderbird email program returned to normal and I was able to view my email as before. Really weird. I will refrain from updating in future because that is apparently a really bad idea. It took a long time and a lot of effort to get my email back. And there IS a place in Thunderbird to request password and username so the response was also WRONG in that as well.

Please show me the link the the request form. If you are talking about the request form for forgotten password info for THIS support forum, it has nothing to do with your email or the operation of Thunderbird. But at least your back working. And the answer is most certainly not wrong.

All I know is that after I updated my Thunderbird email program it would no longer work or allow me access. I was asked to sign in. Since my providers password wouldn't work I asked for my signin info which then wasn't sent for quite some time. I then signed in to no avail. Sometime later my email began working again. I'm at a loss to understand what happened but apparently updating is a really bad idea. Thanks for trying to help.

If you ask for password help and get told email will be sent. Then it will obviously not going to be sent to the account which you cannot access, because you would not be able to see it as you cannot log on. In these cases they usually use a stored alternative email address often it is your email provider email address. So the email would eventually appear in whatever email address you set up as alternative.

However, there is another alternative which could have occured. Your Firewall which may be part of your Anti-Virus product must have Thunderbird as an allowed program. After Thunderbird updates itself, it is possible that the Firewall does not recognise the updated Thunderbird is the same as the old Thunderbird. Hence not able to receive or send and password will not work because your computer Firewall is blocking it.

Usually, resetting the Firewall whilst Thunderbird is closed fixes this, or it can correct itself if Thunderbird is exited and computer rebooted.

So it is highly possible this occurred due to your Firewall temporailly out of synch with an updated thunderbird.

Let's look at this logically with the facts. You do not sign into Thunderbird so there is no Thunderbird username and password. There are no Thunderbird servers or offices with help desk staff to send you anything even if there was a place to request that information to be sent. Even if there was there is no info to send since Thunderbird login is not a real thing. I still would like to see the link to this page where you requested your log in info be sent to you. You claim you did receive this info. Who sent it? Let's see the email header of where you got it from.

Toad-Hall has the likely situation you were in. I just would like to know where this hidden Thunderbird login info request form is.

The above is what I finally received. When I initially tried to access my email in Thunderbird as usual I was told I needed to sign in and as I was unable to I then requested my password and username. As it turns out Thunderbird eventually started working. I will hesitate to update Thunderbird in future.

Hi Michael, I'm a moderator here on support.mozilla.org. The message you cited was for resetting your password on this website, not any account that can be added to Thunderbird itself.

That message would have been sent to the Shaw address you have associated with your support.mozilla.org account, then you use Thunderbird to access your Shaw account.

If you couldn't access your Shaw account after updating Thunderbird, that may have just been a coincidence. :)

Just so you are clear on what has been mentioned as you were clearly very confused.

You were attempting to request a new password for gaining access to post on this support forum.

Requesting to update a username/password to a general support forum webpage has nothing to do with any mail account/email address you have added to the Thunderbird email client program on your computer.

If you ever have a problem with your email addresses in Thunderbird, then you first need to logon to your webmail account for that email address via a browser using your username and password to test that they work and you can confirm access to the webmail account.

Thunderbird keeps a record of stored passwords and usernames, although usernames are usually the full email address. So you can always use the stored details first to test connectivity to webmail account.

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Secirity' > 'Passwords' tab
  • click on 'Saved Passwords' button
  • click on 'Show Passwords' button.

To update a password... right click on relevant link and choose 'Edit Password'

If you ever have the need to update the password, it can only be done via the relevant webmail account. Then you test you can access the webmail account with new password. When all works ok, you then update the stored password in Thunderbird and restart Thunderbird.
