I email quotes from Peachtree Accounting using Thunderbird as the email client.

All was working fine until this morning. When sending a quote with an email address in the contact record in Peachtree, Thunderbird would open the default email profile with the customized signature content from the profile and the email would be addressed properly. I could customize the body of the email and send it.

If there was no email in the contact record in Peachtree, the same thing would happen except I would have to type the email address, customize the email and press send.

Now when I email from Peachtree, I get a popup that says "Another application is attempting to send mail using your user profile. Are you sure you want to send mail?" When I press OK the popup closes but Thunderbird does not open a write window for editing, nor is the email sent.

Any idea what changed?

TB did update from 60.4 to 60.5 recently, so that may have confused Peachtree when identifying the default email program. If you change the default to another program in W10 Settings, reboot, then change it back to TB, that may correct the problem.

Thanks for the reply. I reset the default email app and am now getting an error message from Peachtree Accounting saying "Your MAPI compliant, default e-mail application returned an error. Please try again."

Also I tried going back to a previous version of Thunderbird, but after downgrading it upgrades again. I deselected the option to automatically upgrade Thunderbird.

Any ideas?

Setting TB as the default app for all purposes is not as easy as it sounds. Besides setting it as default in Settings/Apps/Default apps, look at the bottom of that window and click 'Choose default apps by protocol' and make sure TB is set for mailto. Next, for 'Set defaults by app', click TB, Manage, and check that TB is selected for mailto.

In TB Tools/Options/Advanced/General, click Check Now.. and Set as Default for E-Mail, OK to close Options.

Finally, click the W10 Start button, type fixmapi.exe and then Run as Administrator.

I have now found out that I cannot even email a word document. This is highly frustrating to say the least.

Whenever this issue comes up, it's a matter of trying to find if the fault lies in TB or some registry setting in Windows, or the sending app, in this case Peachtree. One way to test if it's a Windows config. problem is to right-click a file in File Explorer, Send to/Mail recipient. If a new TB message doesn't appear with the file attached, then the MAPI process in Windows is broken. There are numerous users (not just TB users) who've had varying degrees of success in fixing this.

I tried sending via Word and have the same problem so it is not Peachtree. I made Outlook my default email app and it works. When I switch back to Thunderbird it does not work so the problem seems to be with Thunderbird, right?

I think the problem is that Outlook takes over certain MAPI functions even if it's not the default email app. It's not a coincidence that all these functions, including emailing from other apps, work fine on my computer which does not have Outlook installed.

Have tried different SMPT servers (TalkTalk and Gmail) but that makes no difference so the fault seems local. Any suggestions?

I've spent a lot of time investigating this problem, and there is no single fix. Ironically, it used to be present in W7 instead of W10, and there was a simple solution. It seems that Outlook installs an msmapi32.dll file that overrides setting any other program as default for sending from Explorer or other apps. I'm not sure there's a way to have TB as the MAPI-default on any system with Outlook.

I'm not sure the problem lies with TB, as it works for some users. If I knew there was a simple way to fix it, I would say so. You could submit a report to Bugzilla, and you might get some guidance, but I doubt that it would be regarded as a deficiency in TB, especially since it doesn't affect the ability to send attachments the usual way.

This discussion relates to sending email via TB from non-TB programs. Do you mean you can't send a TB message with an attachment since the upgrade? If so, that's usually due to a security or AV program blocking outgoing mail with attachments.

In my case there are no attachments - I am just sending emails via TB from non-TB programs. This worked last month! I get the same message when using the Rt click menu in File explorer and using the Send To Mail Recipient.

Are you sure there are no attachments? Sending email from another app or from File Explorer is, in effect, attaching a file to a new TB message. If you read the numerous reports of this issue, you will find it's not just a TB problem.

No attachments from my nonTB program - it should load the compose part of TB and fill in about 15 BCC addresses, the subject and the text body - used for a charity - has worked perfectly for over a year. Failed last month with the error message quoted.. May be due to a TB or a W10 update. I tried the file explorer transfer since mentioned in this thread and got the same error message

That looks like you're using TB with a word processor to create a mail merge process (which can also be done entirely within TB with Mail Merge). But whether it's that, or emailing a file from Peachtree or Word, or attaching a file from File Explorer, all of these operations depend on a working MAPI connection with TB.
