Ver68 lost my existing profile. Don't desire external account or Synching. How do I make Rev68 see my profile?

more options

Should have been warned that Ver68 would screw up my life. After upgrading from Ver 65 to Ver 68, my profile is not being found by the new install. I do NOT desire "synching' with other devices, and it is a security risk to have to use an "account" to do this. Not to mention getting completely screwed if I cannot access the Web or lose the password.

What idiot thinks this stuff up? What committee of monkeys on keyboards allows it to be implemented?

Just tried trashing everything in the ver 68 Profile folder & Ctrl-Copy everything from the existing profile. Restarted FF but it didn't work, no History or Bookmarks, still see the 3 tabs from the Ver68 brief run.

Now that the enclosing Folder contains several Profiles that seem to be segregated by which Installation can access them -- the Profile filename SHOULD tell you WHICH it is liked to !!!

So what happens if you change the Profile filename?

Used to be that when you opened FF, you could invoke the menu that let you chose which profile to use.

Hello, please pause your changes for a moment. Which profile is the one you want to use in Firefox 68? Is it listed in the Profile Manager, either the external one or the internal one?

External Profile Manager

With Firefox not running at all, start the program with the -P command-line switch. See: Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles -- "Start the Profile Manager when Firefox is closed".

Internal Profile Manager

In a new tab, type or paste about:profiles and press Enter to load the list.

If the profile you want to use is listed, can you launch it is Firefox 68?

Creating new profile via Terminal didn't work... managed to do it via About:profiles and make it the Default profile.

WHY DIDN'T THEY SAY SO IN THE FIRST PLACE? WHY DID THEY SAY YOU HAVE TO CREATE A 3RD PARTY "ACCOUNT?"

Most people upgrade from one version to the next with no problems. I don't know whether we can figure out what went wrong on yours.

Were you able to track down your old data in a different profile folder and copy it to where you want it?

Well I figured out how to link my old profile to the new "installation" but now I've forgotten how I did it -- and my wifes computer needs to have the same thing done. The damn "up grade me" popup cannot be dismissed forever and it annoyed her into clicking on it. FUCK !!!

STOP THE NANNY UPGRADE PATH

where's the Profile folder -- Users/Library/ something

Her computer has a newer version of OSX which hinders my access to system files so I have to get around that as well...

OK, so several profile folders. What a pain in the ass... the newest creation file must be THIS version.. so I have to delete its contents and paste in the contents from... which other one ????

WHy the hell don't they have filenames that make some sense? I guess the one with the latest "file changed" time, other than the newly created one, is the one from the last version of FF, with all the bookmarks etc needed.

xxx.default xxx.default-release xxx.default-release-1

IIRC you CAN change the profile file name, right? But do you have to do it in a special way so as not to lose the "link" to the app?

Whoever decided to make an upgrade install that DOES NOT LINK to the owner's existing bookmarks etc -- and WITHOUT any warning of all the work necessary work to do so- should be hung by the neck until dead.

When you are Running FF, there should be a Menu function that shows the Profile filename which is in use.

And Upgrades should save a COPY of the old version instead of over-writing it.

And the Firefox filename should include the version in the name itself.

If you haven't already, could you close out of Firefox and do a normal system shutdown and restart to complete any pending updates and release any file locks.

Then try:

Profile Manager Page

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

This page should list at least one profile and could list many. (Each profile has two folders and one or more buttons. Do not use any Remove buttons!)

The profile that Firefox is currently using will have this:

This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.

Do you have another profile named default or default-longnumber listed on this page? If so, you can check whether it is the one you were using recently by clicking its Launch profile in new browser button.

If it isn't what you want, simply close that new window.

If it IS what you want, back on the about:profiles page, click the Set as default profile button for that profile so Firefox uses it automatically at the next startup.

Any progress so far?

What you said is probably what people need to know when they hit the UPDATE button and then are presented with the page saying - "hey, us idiot code kiddies here at FF have just screwed you completely because this update just locked you out of your existing profile. So you cannot even use your existing bookmarks to lookup the helpful web pages you have previously saved which might tell you how to fix the situation we idiot code kiddies have created for you. Have a fucked up day wasting hours trying to make FF work again, instead of doing productive work or having any fun."

OR they could have included an option in the install process explaining this and presenting all existing profiles and asking which one should be linked to the new install. Default being the one used by the install being updated.

But they didn't, because they are IDIOTS.
