Weird Firefox pop up messages in upper right hand corner

more options

Ever since Firefox updated to 70.0 I get these random pop up messages on the right hand corner. They come and go within a few seconds and slides off the screen. Most of them say how my anti virus is going to expire but I don't have anti virus or need it on a MAC. How do I get rid of them?

Hi dave87, are these "notifications" that the browser or a website might be sending to MacOS, or do they seem to be related to a Firefox toolbar button? That might be easier to distinguish if you shrink the browser window away from the corner.

One possible culprit would be an extension. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove).

Any improvement?

I have add on's selected. See attached picture of the warning I get on my screen.

M post above should have said no add's are selected.

Could you temporarily shut down website notifications using the "Do Not Disturb" setting:

You can check that here:

  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the left column, click Privacy & Security

Then on the right side, scroll down to the Permissions section, and under Notifications, check the box for "Pause notifications until Firefox restarts".

If that stops the popups, then we could turn to investigating what is sending those notifications.

Apple wants you to think that, but other users have a different experience. It's probably a good idea to run a Malware scan:

The Free version is sufficient for a one-time cleaning.
