connection to server imap.gmail.com was reset

I keep getting this message when I either try and send a message or try and download any new incoming messages. I have to reset my wifi connection or X out thunderbird and open up again to get my messages to work . But then within about 10 minutes or so its back to doing it again. I saw somewhere that it said for a similar issues to change the Authentication method to OAuth2. Only problem is that is not one of the options. This is what is shown. Server name: imap.gmail.com Port: 995 Connection Security: SSL/TLS Authentication Method: Normal Password

Copy the messages to a subfolder of Local Folders before you remove the POP account. After you create the IMAP account, these messages can be copied to an IMAP folder, but do so only if you need to access them from another device with the same IMAP account. Otherwise, they will still be accessible in Local Folders.

Here is a snapshot of what it looks like when the Error comes up on Thunderbird on bottom right.

Your Server Type is POP, but the server is imap.gmail.com. The incoming imap.gmail.com works on port 993, while the POP server pop.gmail.com runs on port 995. Also, OAuth2 for gmail in TB is only supported for IMAP, not POP.

If you want an IMAP account, remove the POP account after you copy any messages to Local Folders, then add it as IMAP. If you want to stay with POP, enter the correct server and port, and keep the authentication as normal password.

Thanks for the info. I changed the server name to pop.gmail.com and left the port on 995. But when I click on Get Messages it has box that pops up for me to put my Password in, which I do. But then another box pops up that says Sending of password for "my email" did not succeed. I know its the correct one cause I went into the Security area of options and got the password. I dont know the differences between having either a Pop or IMAP acct so I figured it was easier to just change the server name to Pop and the port of 995. What do you think my issue is now? Thanks for the help

When you looked in Options for the password, did the entry in the Site column begin with mailbox or imap? Try removing the gmail passwords for the incoming and outgoing (smtp) entries, restart TB, and enter the password when prompted. For a gmail POP account, check that the authentication for the incoming and outgoing servers is normal password.

See also the section 'Suddenly can not login in anymore' in the kb article, and review if you have enabled 'less-secure apps' or two-step verification.

You will find this a lot simpler if you use IMAP and OAuth2, the default setup for new gmail accounts in TB.

Ok it did start with smtp for the password.

So I am gathering you are saying it would be better if I just started a new acct with IMAP? Only thing I am trying to figure out is how I can copy all my older saved emails and possibly load them into either a folder or better the new IMAP email acct. A lot of them are probably trash but alot of others are emails from different business acquaintances that I need to look back on sometimes for different information.

ok last time I will bother you and I truly thank you for your help. Is there a way that I can select all messages to copy them over or do I have to do it one by one. I know I can click on the cntrl button but I wanted to just like Select All or is that not possible. I have literally hundreds I would like to save.
