Hi all.

We have recently migrated our business email to Google's G Suite so that Gmail now handles our mail affairs. When trying to update Thunderbird with the new POP settings, I am getting the following error message:

The STAT command did not succeed. Error getting message number and sizes. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: Username and password not accepted.

This occurs with any authentication method, be it 'Normal password' or 'Oauth'. I double and triple checked all settings but the error keeps occurring; no access via POP is possible. IMAP works without a hitch.

I have tried POP access with other email clients (Windows Mail and Outlook) with the settings attempted in Thunderbird and it works flawlessly there.

Any ideas?

Thx, Tom

Is pop even enabled at gmail? This is the settings link I use. https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#settings/fwdandpop

Yes.

I should have mentioned that from the get go. I actually spent about 30 minutes with the Google support chat to go through their entire troubleshoot bucket list and activating POP in Gmail was the first thing to do.

As I said, POP access works fine in other email clients.

It could be anti virus being ever helpful. Usually it is a product from symantec involved in STAT command issues.

However really the only answer is log the connection and see exactly what is happening. Just make sure you have no mail scanning enabled before hand.
