Thunderbird crashes and stops responding when I try to empty my trash quite often. It has also stops responding quit often doing some other tasks like sending e-mails and I have to close it and reopen it some times more than once to get it working again. Also where do I go to change the Thunderbird main account password when I set up the account. Not the individual e-mail account passwords.

If it crashes there will be a crash id. Please post a few.

I do not get the Crash reporter window. I will just get a small window that say Thunderbird is not responding. Then I have to shut it down and re-open it. Mostly happens when I am try to empty the trash file. It just gets stuck in the process that it is working on it and the only thing you can do is close it. Nothing else responds. I will look into it further tomorrow.

See if either of the following makes any difference. Most hanging issues are extremely low memory (my issue) and third part software that is also messing with the files as Thunderbird runs. For instance empty trash simply deletes a file for a pop account.

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

I Have disabled the only add-on that I have running which is ImportExport tools NG. I am still not sure if that was the problem. It happens so sporadic its hard to tell. The other item that could be interfering is the Nord VPN. It has not been giving me any problems for a while now, so don't really know if it has been fixed. I have a screen shot of the error council that might be of some help to fix the problem.

Nord VPN is my choice of the issue.

You provider might not even allow you to connect to their mail server from some of the exit points Nord offers. When you are in hiding, those that expect you to be somewhere really do not react well to you moving, especially large distances in a short period of time. Some ISPs simply deny access to mail unless you are on their network. Nord is not. Some providers Google, outlook, yahoo check that you have not moved to the other side of the world. If you have they will often lock the account.

Basically a VPN and email clients are incompatible due to the security providers have placed around accounts being hacked and misused. Despite the things technically functioning together. Everything is a suck it and see experiment as to whether is will work or not.
