something happened to my settings - the line at the bottom of the page that used to show URLs when hovering, and also the progression of page loading, disappered and i don't know how to bring it back. this used to be above the bottom line that shows all open windows etc.

You have installed plugins with known security issues. You need to update them.

  • Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 11.0
  • Next Generation Java Plug-in 1.6.0_16 for Mozilla browsers
  1. Check your plugin versions: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
    • Note: plugin check page does not have information on all plugin versions
  2. Update Shockwave for Director
    • NOTE: this is not the same as Shockwave Flash; this installs the Shockwave Player.
    • Use Firefox to download and SAVE the installer to your hard drive from the link in the article below (Desktop is a good place so you can find it).
    • When the download is complete, exit Firefox (File > Exit)
    • locate and double-click in the installer you just downloaded, let the install complete.
    • Restart Firefox and check your plugins again.
    • Download link and more information: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Shockwave+plugin+with+Firefox
  3. Update Java:

Yes and I checked the link. But I still don't see URL's when hovering. Any suggestions?

In Firefox 4.0 b7 you see the link if you hover at the right part of the location bar.

Anyone have more detail or link to info on "hover at the right part of the location bar"? If there's a way to see link address without addon I'd like to know, I already have to many addons. I'm missing something though as I can't hover over Location bar and link at same time.

At the left on the location bar you still see (part of) the current URL. At the right you see the link in a grayish color on hover.

Are you using the Default theme (Tools > Add-ons > Themes)?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

FF4.0b11. Is there any way to darken the color of the hovered-over URL that appears to the far right of the location bar? I tried looking in about:config and nothing seemed obvious. A nice medium green would be great, but that light gray is hard to read.

That display of the hovered link and loading/connecting, etc. seems to be in a state of flux - it may well change before Firefox 4 is released.

What was recently in Firefox 4b12 pre (nightly) in lower left corner of Firefox window:
