firefox wont open after update

about 2 weeks ago i updated thunderbird and after that it would not open. i just updated firefox...it had been crashing multiple times a day...and was hoping the update would help...foolish me. now neither f-fox or t-bird will open and im stuck using IE....i asked on the t-bird site and the only response was that my security software might be blocking...i attempted to load tbird with security shut down...no help.... any advice would be 'preciated jeff

I solved the problem. This happened just after an automatic Firefox update. When I clicked on the Firefox icon, nothing happened. Turned out that Firefox was "running". I downloaded a new version of Firefox and was in the process of installing it, when the installer said "You must shut down Firefox before proceeding". I typed CTRL+ALT+DEL to get the Task Manager. Firfox was not listed in Applications, but firefox.exe was listed in Processes. I selected it and clicked End Process, and then Firefox would start. I never completed installing the newly downloaded version.
