When Firefox 4.0.1 starts it shows only a Restore Session Tab saying: Well, this is embarrassing. Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. Representation of the 2 column table follows:

  • Restore | Widows and Tabs;
  • (ChkMrk) | Window 1;
  • (ChkMrk) | about:blank

Wow, if Firefox cannot recover about:blank after I close all tabs and then close Firefox normally, we are in real trouble with recovering after an unexpected termination. I would like to post a .png file picture of the message page, but that does not seem to be an option.

It is also possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note).

Thanks for trying, but not really relevant, because there are no crashes involved, it happens after a normal close. As I said, it is when I start Firefox again - AFTER I close all tabs and then close Firefox normally.

Additional note: I use "Show my windows and tabs from last time". That is (using the classic Menu Bar, not that cumbersome new [Firefox ↓] button that hides everything I use frequently {and I need the Menu Bar for space for the search box and add-on buttons}) Tools, Options, General Tab, set "When Firefox starts" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time".
