how to force Firefox to turn off autocomplete in HTML?

more options

I have a web application that conains a username and password login page. I want to disable the autocomplete feature programatically (i.e. in HTML or javascript). In IE, autocomplete="off" works perfect, but not in Firefox. In Firefox, with autocomplete="off" the username does not autocompete, but the password autocomplete's as soon as I enter a valid username. I do not want Firefox to do this. How can I make this work with Firefox?

That only happens if you have saved a name and password previously in the Password Manager.

Thanks. I did notice that, but was hoping to prevent the prior info from appearing. In any event, thanks.
