Firefox 5 does not support Real Player's ability to download videos from Youtube. The "download video to RealPlayer" button does not show when you scroll the mouse over the screen. This is a real disappointment as Firefox 4 was fine.

I updated to Firefox 5 as I was prompted to do so. Discovered that the "download to RealPlayer" button that used to show up on videos was no longer showing up. Saw something on Realplayer that Firefox 5 doesn't do this.

It notified me that it was not going to be compatible with Real Video so I skipped the update and somehow it ended up taking place anyway. Can we go back to the days when the Portable Version of Firefox wasn't automatically updatable? Nothing worse than getting a version forced on you that breaks compatibility. Why exactly do I need Firefox 5 anyway? I would much prefer an update that goes - "We have a new version. Go to our site to get it if you think you might want it" rather than one that comes down from one click of the mouse.

I use Internet Explorer when i want to use Real Player, it works fine. Seems every 3 or so updates firefox has you have to wait for them to fix this recurring problem which can take months.

First off, Real.com notes that they're working on updating the Real plug-in for Firefox 5 compatibility. The Support page at their site reads:

Firefox 5: The Download This Video button may not appear for some users in Firefox 5; this compatibility issue will be fixed later this month. In the meantime, uninstalling and reinstalling RealPlayer should resolve the issue.

I agree with any criticisms that the Firefox 5 download was (apparently) hurried and I ESPECIALLY agree if the update was coerced upon us users.

But I think that some of the criticism has gone over-the-top and people should bear in mind that Firefox is a free product largely crafted by volunteers.

But yeah, I agree that it was stupid and it sucks that Firefox 5 had these issues, particularly with the Real.com download plug-in.

How the hell can you say the release of Firefox 5.0 was "hurried"? It was released on the exact day that was set when the Fast Release schedule said it would be. Releases are date driven now, not feature driven; if a feature is considered ready for release, it is released with the next scheduled version. If it isn't ready, it will be held until it is ready for release, no more holding up a release while a feature is being completed or fixed.

If these outfits like Real (and many others) can't keep up with the schedule, they need to "up their game" or hang it up, IMO. Mozilla didn't solicit or entice them into making a Firefox add-on, it was the choice of each outfit to do so.

As far as being "coerced", are you even aware that there is a "switch" to disable automatic updates or disable updates altogether?

As far as the guy who mentioned Portable Firefox, I guess he isn't aware that it isn't even made by Mozilla, and there is a Portable Apps support forum for Portable Firefox.

NOTE: The Real Player has apparently been updated to be compatible with Firefox 5. The Real.com site reads:

Firefox 5: The latest update of RealPlayer, released on July 12, fixes the compatibility issue with Firefox 5. Please click the RealPlayer logo in the top left corner of RealPlayer 14, click Check for Update, and follow the prompts to install the latest build(there is no cost for this update).

So delete your old one and download this (or else go to the "Update" option on one of the tabs). I haven't used it yet, but hopefully everything's okay now.

Now why would Mozilla make changes to a browser that won't support Real Player downloads, and is not compatible with Norton Antivirus? This is ridiculous. Mozilla used to be the best, but unfortunately, we are being forced to use the crappy IE, since Google Chrome is not as user friendly and you can't copy and paste links when using the Google spreadsheets! Come guys, get with the program and do your job. FIX these plug ins! They are vital!

@amindapm

Sorry, but your view of what needs to be compatible with what is backwards. Firefox is the primary application that these plugins or add-ons are created to work with, when Firefox is changed these other companies need to fix their plugins for Firefox to continue to be compatible with a new version of Firefox.

As far as Norton goes, they had an update available for their Firefox add-ons on the same day that Firefox 5.0 was released - 06-21. Maybe they need to work on their update setup for their Firefox users to make the update procedure a bit more "user friendly" and maybe not require each user to actively do anything to get the update.

Real Player ver. 10.0.6 666 solves the same problem with Firefox 6.0.

if you have Firefox 5 and find that your Real Player won't allow you to download video there is only one thing you need do: Upgrade to the latest Real Player edition and your problem should be resolved. Jury is still out on whether this works for Firefox 6. Personally, I'm staying with Firefox 5 because my life is too demanding to spend it constantly changing my browser. My next move will be a new browser, maybe Chrome or whatever. Peace.

Instead waiting for the Real company to update their plugin for each new Firefox release, install the DownloadHelper addon(does same thing plus way more options) from the official mozilla addons repository. DownloadHelper is compatible up to Firefox version 9 currently and is updated very frequently.

Hi, I've been frustrated with this issue and finally got mine working so I thought I'd post what I did to maybe save someone some trouble.

  1. 1 Made sure i had the latest version of real player by updating. Check
  2. 2 Made sure i had the latest version of Firefox which was odd because i could not find Firefox update. Finally by clicking on Help and then About Firefox a window appeared and started updating. Check
  3. 3 Checked that my plug ins where enabled. Check
  4. 4 Checked my extensions and made sure i had Real Player Browser Record Plug in 15.0.1 enabled. Check
  5. 5 Restart Firefox. Check

Mine is working fine, i hope this helps.

Have a good one... ,,\/ Dave
