In making changes to my google site I'm no longer able to make or open mailto links, they just open in a blank page. I didn't have that problem with the previous version, but that one had a tendency to crash all over the place.

For the Google Toolbar part you have alternatives and you can override compatibility and use the Extension.

See https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/841081

As for email links , I clicked on a "mailto:" link at the bottom of one of my pages and it worked -- it is just a link to my default email program, I don't see how that can be a problem -- maybe a clearer explanation would help if it is a particular page. Make sure JavaScript enabled and not disabled by some extension.

Try Firefox Safe mode to see if an extension is at fault see Extension issues(#fx4ext)

None of the mail links worked - not on my own website or any other website for that matter. I've downgraded to firefox to 4.0.1 and now everything is back to normal again and......... I have my google toolbar!

I'm having the mailto link problem, too. Don't have google toolbar, so I don' tknow about that. For the mailto links, it looks like a problem when I have Gmail set to handle mailto URL's. If I change the mailto handler to be Outlook, it works fine.
