how do I uninstall Google update plug in?
I don't like having plugins automatically added when I update Firefox. I want to uninstall the Google update plugin which was added without my permission. I also would like to know how to stop further plugins or extensions from being automatically updated or installed. they cause me nothing but problems.

You can see the installed plugins on the about:plugins page.
You can set the pref plugin.expose_full_path to true on the about:config page to see the full path of plugins on the about:plugins page. It is best not to leave that pref set to true as it exposes that full path to web servers, so reset that pref to false after you are done with the about:plugins page.
You can open about:plugins and about:config via the location bar, like you open a website (about: is a special protocol to access some build-in pages). If you get a warning when opening the about:config page then you can confirm that you want to continue.

Thanks cor-el. I sent you a note. I did as directed for the Google Update, and now will restart to see if it worked...I actually used my uninstall program, but needed the full file path. the Java Console is another matter as it has been disabled by FF because it is incompatible with FF 7.0, and doesn't show on about:plugins so I can not find the full file name to get rid of that one. Your suggestions would be appreciated.

The Google updater is installed by Google software (probably the Google Toolbar) and has to be removed or disabled via that software or you need to find its install location and remove the plugin there as posted above.
You can uninstall and remove Java Console extensions, you do not need them to run Java applets.
The Java plugin that you see in Tools > Add-ons > Plugins is used to run Java applets.

You can also disable the Java Quick Starter extension if you have it.
- Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions
- Control Panel -> Java -> Advanced tab -> Miscellaneous -> Java Quick Starter (disable)
