When updating from 3.6xxx to 12, the update hangs while on the screen saying checking add=ons compatibility. This requires me to download a new 3.6xxx version.

I have Windows 7. The update goes well until the checking add-on compatibility screen comes on with a progress bar. It just hangs, kinda grayed out and no progress. After a while I tried to cancel and Windows 7 says the program is not responding so I have have to close it. Now I have no Firefox at all and I have to find and download another 3.6xxx version.

Did you try to wait a bit longer in case the update URL of one or more extensions isn't responding?

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

You can try to delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.rdf, extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

See "Corrupt extension files":

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.

Thanks, guys. I tried both suggestions, individually and in combination. No joy. Still hangs up on the screen where it is checking for compatibility.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Yeah, I guess that's my next step. I guess the key is "...but be careful not to copy corrupted files" as who know which are and aren't corrupted. I'd probably be fine with just restoring bookmarks. The other stuff isn't all that big a deal as I can rebuild it.

I copied my old profile to another location. I then created a new, clean profile and tried to update to Firefox 12. It amazingly still hung while checking add-ons. However, when I canceled the window, Firefox 12 was active. I was able to copy SOME of the old profile that I saved. Not bookmarks though. Thinking ahead I had exported my bookmarks to IE and I was then able to import them back to Firefox 12.

Thanks for your help. Took a long time to mess with this, but I think everything is okay now.
