Why has Thuderbird stopped sorting emails by date and added a new sorting method of its own?

Yesterday my emails were sorted in strict date order. Today they're sorted by subject and date, and are in reverse date order - oldest first. So all the emails I've received from someone in the past two months are grouped together, earliest first. I can't imagine what use that method can be to anyone.

When I click on the Date header nothing changes.

Sounds like you might have threaded sort turned on. View-Sort By-Unthreaded

Click on "Date" to sort by date. Click again to sort in reverse order.

Or in the menu, View|Sort by will give you further options.

No menu? Press the <alt> button on your keyboard.

Thanks, Zenos, but nothing has changed. Each time I get a reply from a person I'm corresponding with, every email I've ever sent him moves up the list of emails in to the most recent spot, and sorts itself in reverse order (i.e. earliest first, latest last). It's extremely annoying and I can't see any reason for it to be happening.

Thanks, that solved the problem. I've never been to that View menu before so I wonder how it could have become turned on. But thanks again.
