Image appears the right way up when viewed on computer but once inserted into the email it is inverted. Can't seem to locate a rotate button or ability to edit it other than resizing it when inserting.

Thunderbird uses the orientation of the image, not the exif data that rotates it favored by apple. The solution is use a real graphics program to correctly orient the image in the file.

Get one of the free image editors and fix the orientation before attaching. Gimp or Irfanview are a couple of good ones.
