How to make an email being edited be what I see, actively on top, when shifting programs in stead of the main window.

When I edit an email I see that email's window. Maybe I need to find a link in a browser and deactivate Thunderbird, leaving the email window open. When I reactivate Thinderbird to continue editing my email, the window I get is the main window and not the email window. So, I will have to find the email window that is now hiding behind the open windows on my screen. The natural way would be to retrieve the email window that I am editing when I leave the browser and reactivate Thunderbird, not the main window with the inbox etcetera.

Once I start editing a new email I think it should be automatically saved in the Draft folder as untitled. If I don't want to keep it, erasing it is very easy.

With Windows, this is much easier because hovering on the taskbar icon displays thumbnails of any open windows. Perhaps you would benefit from an OS X utility that enhances the taskbar:
