To reduce "plugin-container.exe" from hogging the CPU:

(in XP) 1. in Task Manager, right click on "plugin-container.exe", 2. point to "Set Priority...", 3. click "Low".

The other processes will have priority over "plugin-container.exe".

The solution for this firefox mess is ...... Chrome. Get one designed by professionals.

I am tired of Firefox crashing 6-8 times a day. Plugin-container.exe is running right now on my computer and I have only googled what this process is then followed the link to a couple forums. At no time have I been on a page that used one of the three listed plugins. So I guess the idea that it only opens when those are used is some how a fluke confined to only my computer? The crashes have gotten so bad that not only does it crash Firefox. it gives me the blue screen of death and restarts my computer at times. ( sometimes 3 times a night )

Like other users I am seriously contemplating switching to google crome. But unlike them, if I do make the switch I will not be coming back to firefox. By that point I will consider the browser too unreliable and dangerous to my computer.

The plugin container causes Firefox crashes on my computer too. It crashes the Firefox window interface including the titlebar with the close button. But during a crash Flash objects often still continue running in the web page. Menu items, navigation buttons, web page, plugin objects and everything else becomes unresponsive. Also Firefox causes my system to slow down when Firefox has crashed, but it does not show up as unresponsive in the Task Manager until i click the Close Window button. Then I can only End Task.

Machine: Firefox 3.6.6 / Flash 10.1.53.64 / Windows XP Home SP3 / Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2140 @1.60 GHz / 2 GB RAM

It is not a problem of Firefox version or Flash version. All current Firefox versions that include plugin container have the same BUG with any Flash version!

TXGUY That DOES NOT work the crashes are actually caused simply by having firefox 3.6.6 or later installed. Firefox does not even have to be running to cause crashes...? What is the problem? It has something to do with the installation. It needs to be fixed. Plugin-container just amplifies the problem. I started this thread I followed the suggestions and when I restarted my computer the crashes started all over again and all this without even ever running firefox. I think they need to recheck their installation check all running programs and start over fix all issues and listen to what they are being told on what is happening.

You are incorrect. If you believe Firefox is causing other items on your system to crash, un-install it! Simple. And there was no Firefox 3.6.5; that version number was used for another Mozilla product.

I have used Firefox for years, have never had problems with it, do not overload Firefox with add-ons, do not install free junk from the internet on my system, use an excellent firewall and AV/AS which I keep updated and use to scan regularly.

If you read the Adobe flash forum post that I referenced above, an experienced Adobe Flash user who encodes Flash videos explains how inexperienced coders are the reason for much the of the problem with high CPU usage when viewing Flash videos. Yes, many of the Flash vids on the internet are encoded and placed on Youtube, Hulu, etc., by novices who know very little about making their output more efficient for the end viewer, and most of them could not care less about causing the end viewer some distress.

Many others on this forum (just search for plugin-container) have been successful in alleviating some issues by disabling plugin-container. I have had no problems with plugin-container, but have tested the disabling method to be sure that it works before recommending it to others. I currently have plugin-container active. I do not spend much time watching flash videos, maybe one or two per day, but my systems show no appreciable increase in RAM usage when doing so. There is a slight increase in CPU usage which is to be expected. I do not load several flash video tabs or multiple flash game tabs at the same time, as some others have indicated that they do; maybe it's me, but I can only watch one video at a time or play one game at a time. I have much more important things to which I need to devote my time.

You may need to look elsewhere on your system for other possible causes of your system crashes.

you are incorrect firefox hanged my whole system forcing me to reboot. i have since moved to Opera which uses more ram the firefox. been surfing for days without a hang or a crash. it is firefox that causes this problem. i no as i haven't experienced it since removing it from my system.

Anonymous Hanging and crashing are totally separate issues. Hanging is most often caused by an extension; can be caused by security software and can be easily remedied.

Solution to 3.6.4 and 3.6.6 tabs displaying "flash plugin crashed"

1) Reinstall 3.6.3. Job done. Kchzthxbai 2) Do not allow auto update of firefox, but do check for updates and probably best to be 2 weeks behind.

PErsonally, Ive been using firefox for 4 years now, from 1 onwards. I went from 55 plugins to 30 (As functionality was incorporated) I watch out for rogue plugins. Everything works fine, but as soon as TAsk manager or Process explorer starts to show either OVer 900 handles 800MB used 2500 Gdi objects Then I usually restart.

Yes, there are security fixes always, and it has not changed anything for me. I still run virus free, problem free, system wide. Every few months I might use an online scanner and bang 0 issues. In between those times Nod 32 does its heuristic task well.

No doubt one day I will be affected, but so far the biggest issue I've had in 6 months has been this container process "upgrade"

Still, that said, I will probably look into running 3.6.6 and disable container or whatever is necessary to avoid the now occuring "flash plugin crashed" issue.

3.6.6 also failed in total safe mode so it does seem flawed for some reason but anyway, roll on progress.

Okay, I'm now running 3.6.6. and I had to set to "false" the offending bits in about:config.

I am running 3.6.6 and have in the the past week had FF crash/close when going to non Flash site, my bank.

But I come here not for this but to say Zone Alarm stopped plugin-container.exe from accessing the "net". I did not know what this was so googled it and found this thread. The unsettling thing is FF was not running when ZA alerted me, I was running GTalk though.

I will be allowing this to update but it seems rather strange that this updates on its own outside of FF.

I mentioned GTalk only as a reference to some "net" related app running, not that it's part of FF.

My problem goes even farther. Since the update, FF doesn't stop running after I close it. I continues for many hours according to my Task Manager. While my computer idles, FF continues to run and plugin-container.exe starts spontaneously and runs the same blasted set of commercials over and over again. Between them (I've had to "End Process" 5 times since starting this - this time it was a new ad with Heavy Metal music, though), FF & the plugin drive my CPU to 100%.

The point is that I now have to use the Task Manager to end the FF process each time I click out of it. I only run one window at a time and don't use tabs. Oops make that 6 times to shut off the plugin. Seven.

1) I am reporting that 3.6.6 with the container plugin disabled works fine for me. As for crashes, I don't normally get them, that's another issue entirely.

As mentioned previously, try this first.

Type about:config into firefox address bar

Then follow the screenshot by typing the line below into FILTER

DOM.IPC.PLUGINS

and disable by double clicking each to false (as per screenshot)

Then observe for any problems.

TXGuy You know it is funny, when I removed firefox 3.6.6 and reinstalled 3.5.10 the crashes went away. So tell me again how it is not firefox causing the issue. I then removed 3.5.10 and installed 3.6.6 rebooted guess what the crashes returned. So What is causing the problems. I didn't even install flash. So that was not the problem. I am still looking for a solution to my original post. I thought is was plugin container but it turned out to actually be something wrong with the installation of firefox 3.6.6
