embedded pictures won't show in thunderbird
The last few update of Thunderbird has been more problematic than useful. Most all emails I receive are text only with outline boxes where pictures should be. I have already made corrections per other Mozilla Support articles - such as: Tools - Options - Privacy - Allow remote content in messages View - message body as - original HTML
How to I correct this?

What happens if you click 'View in browser' at the top of the message?
Some of the emails I get - do not - have the "View in browser" option anywhere on the page, but it does work for the webpages that has the option - so far.
Thank you for responding.
My guess is that those messages which don't show the images use Javascript in their code. Thunderbird blocks Javascript in emails for good reason. Again, that's a guess.
Why are you giving me guesses? I asked for a solution. When I set the settings to allow remote content - that should include Java. If Thunderbird is going to control the settings instead of my preference by not showing the pictures - then Thunderbird is a detriment - it is NOT a useful email browser.
Is there a solution or not?
Thank you
You do not mention what folder contains the email. If the email is in 'Junk' folder then it will not display remote content no mattere what the setting. You would need to select the email, click on 'not junk' and email should be returned to 'Inbox'.
re : Tools - Options - Privacy - Allow remote content in messages Selecting 'Allow remote content in messages' is really very risky and not advisable. You have to accept the risks if you select it.
Assuming the email is in eg: Inbox and you have selected the display all remote content via Options, > Privacy Did you then select another email and then reselect that email? ....because the view will not change until refreshed.
Best method of selecting to show remote content in specific emails which are in eg: Inbox and they are from a trusted source: select the email so it shows in Message Pane, then click on the remote 'Options' button and select either:
- 'show remote content in this message' for that email
OR
- 'allow remote content from that email address' for that email address.
re : Tools - Options - Privacy - Allow remote content in messages
uncheck 'Allow remote content in messages'
Then select email in eg: Inbox, so it displays in the Message Pane.
Q: Do you see a message below the 'From', 'Subject' , 'To' section, but above the actual email, which says 'To protect your privacy, Thunderbird has blocked remote content in this message' and there is an 'Options' button ? Can you see the this 'Options' button?
Thank you for responding. I did now - as in the past - what you suggested - with no change.
I've got an email right now that is NOT junk - but it did have the red bar stating that, "This email may be a scam" with the OPTIONS box - with options: Ignore warning for this message Edit warning options
If I select "Ignore warning" - it changes nothing - the pictures only have outlines where the pictures supposed to be.
Tools - Options - Privacy - Allow remote content in messages uncheck 'Allow remote content in messages' I'm assuming you have done this and it is still unchecked.
Could you please select the email you originally posted the question about. Confirm that email is in your Inbox and not marked as Junk. then please answer this question: Q: Do you see a message below the 'From', 'Subject' , 'To' section, but above the actual email, which says 'To protect your privacy, Thunderbird has blocked remote content in this message' and there is an 'Options' button ? Can you see this remote content 'Options' button?
Modified
The original email has been deleted since I posted its picture - it did NOT have the - 'To protect your privacy, Thunderbird has blocked remote content in this message'.
'Allow remote content in messages' - is checked - because I want the pictures to show.
It doesn't matter if the 'Allow remote content in messages' Is checked or unchecked - the pictures do not show.
I even set an "allow" exception in the - Mail Content - under Privacy and closed the email and closed Thunderbird and reopened them - still no change.
Next?
Summing up: 'View' > 'Message Body As' is set to "Original HTML" Thunderbird is operating in 'online' mode. All effected Emails are not in Junk or Spam folder. All effected Emails are not marked as 'Junk'. All effected Emails do not display the expected 'To protect your privacy, Thunderbird has blocked remote content in this message' , so therefore there was no 'Options' button to select what to display.
Changes to Tools - Options - Privacy - selecting 'Allow remote content in messages' had no effect.
At the moment please make sure 'Allow remote content in messages' is not selected.
If you have another email which is the same/similar as the one you originally mentioned (not one marked a scam) or can recover that email from your Trash, it woud be useful to keep it, otherwise there is no means of testing.
Please tell me what you see here: 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'General' tab click on 'Config Editor' button
In top search type: permissions locate: permissions.default.image Q: What value is set.....is it 1 or 2 or 3 ? Q: What 'Status' does it say eg: default or 'User Set
If Value = 2 Right click on that line and select 'Reset' close window - top right X click on OK
Test Email to see if you now see message : 'To protect your privacy, Thunderbird has blocked remote content in this message' , including 'Options' button
If you see this right click on Options button and select 'Show remote content in this message'
If all of this works, then close/exit thunderbird. Wait a few moments for all processes to complete then restart Thunderbird and report back on whether the message and options button are still there. check the Config Editor and tell me if the entry permissions.default.image' is bold, User Set and has a number eg:2 or whether it is not bold, Status is default and number is 1
Modified
I finally made it back -
As you asked - I unchecked 'Allow remote content in messages".
Attached is the "Permissions.Default" etc settings.
Thanks
I sent the permissions pic - prematurely because only the top half of your email showed up in Thunderbird email. I did not see the other half until after I logged on your website to respond to you.
Is only seeing the top half of your email part of this problem - or something else?
I've completed the steps you requested of me and nothing corrects the problem of internet content - namely pictures in emails - not showing up in my inbox.
Did somebody drop the ball concerning this issue? Or - is Thunderbird not fit to use? - or is there no Thunderbird technician knowledgeable enough to fix this problem?
Thank you.
There are some basic steps which usually fix the majority of cases. Trying to hunt down the specific issue effecting you requires a degree of patience.
Please try the following: Help > Troubleshooting Infomation click on 'Show folder' button
Close Thunderbird.
Delete the following files - they will be auto recreated.
- session.json
- xulstore.json
Start Thunderbird. Report back on results.
Note: if you cannot see those files then make hidden files and folders visible:
Since some of the banners and pictures that come in some of my emails are necessary to understand the email or respond to (in the required time frame stated in the email) - would you have become concerned after 7 days of silence?
After completing all the steps you suggested - 1. I do get the message - "To protect your privacy" - (it is attached). 2. I am able to view the email as a webpage - but only when the option is available.
An email from Turbotax (today) is the only email I've received in the time span of the last few Thunderbird upgrades, that showed all banners and pictures - that I could tell.
What's next?
Thank you for helping.

Let me repeat a statement I said in an earlier post.
Did somebody drop the ball concerning this issue? Or - is Thunderbird not fit to use? - or is there no Thunderbird technician knowledgeable enough to fix this problem?
You (Toad-Hall) was irritated with me - saying I was impatient in the next post, Insinuating I was impatient because I posted just a week after that statement.
My last Post was on 10/5/16, 9:17 AM. That is 1 day short of a whole month. Now, am I impatient - or - is Mozilla Support truly incompetent??
Or is Mozilla products so buggy they are worthless?

re :You (Toad-Hall) was irritated with me - saying I was impatient in the next post,
No not irritated - just advising that sometimes it is not a quick fix. Usually, the issue is down to a couple of reasons, but clearly it is a bit more than that in your case.
What is Mozilla gonna do? Drop the so-called support forum and put out shoddy software?
You only answered my post - You didn't even say anything about what possible steps could be taken next , neither did you offer to help any further with this (Mozilla Thunderbird UPGRADE) programming bug.
It looks like Mozilla has dropped the ball - or - have you purposely thrown down the ball because you don't care any more?
I think I have a legitimate reason to say Mozilla Support Forum is INCOMPETENT!
Note than none of the regular contributors here, including myself (and we're all volunteers) have or can replicate your problem.
Some of us act as testers by running pre-release versions. So it is tested but only by a tiny handful of users. If you feel it isn't sufficiently tested then please step forward to help out.
On one or two occasions I have had some intractable problem but it has gone away if I re-start with a clean profile. So the problem is, it can be argued, in my profile, and not in the program itself. Maybe you could take the view that there is a bug in Thunderbird because it presumably broke my profile in the first place. But my fault is not reproducible elsewhere, so no developer is going to be able to study it.
No one knows for sure what your problem is, because no-one else has it. Hence the guesses.
